How many teams and divisions are in the NFL?
The National Football League has 32 teams split between the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference has four divisions: East, North, South, and West. Each division has four teams. See the NFL team standings, schedules, and stats for how they stack up this season.
How the NFL got to 32 teams
The league began in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association and took the NFL name in 1922. The AFL–NFL merger took effect in 1970, creating the two-conference structure. In 2002, the Houston Texans joined as the 32nd franchise and the league realigned into its current eight divisions.
